There is a constructive criticis First of all, the poem makes me sympathize with the heir to throne of dullness, Thomas Shadwell, but some laughter. The poem illustrates the qualities of Dryden’s satire- the fund of truth at the bottom, the skillful adjustment of the satire so as to make faults of the merits which are allowed, the magnificent force and variety of gy verse, and the constant maintenance of a kind of superior contempt never degenerating into mere railing or losing its superiority in petty spite.

Dryden uses the mad here to support the poem as a mock epic. The poem begins in the tone of an epic masterpiece, presenting Shadwell’s defining characteristic as dullness, just as every epic hero has a defining characteristic: Mac Flecknoe is the first substantial mock-heroic poem and Thomas Shadwell is the hero of this epic.
For inspiration, Shadwell should imitate his father rather than writers of wit, like Ben Jonson. He never deviates flecknle sense. The poem is set in London, referred to in the poem as Augusta. He also dispatches Mercury to earth to bring Psyche to the abode of the gods.
The only difference between Shadwell and them, he says, will be their names. Moreover, he says, let other writers imitate his son. The proud father of Shadwell hopes that his son’s domain will one day encompass all the earth and that he will produce new dull drydem to delight the dimwitted.

Although I adore Satire and this kind of mock epic poems, I do not agree with John Dryden in two points; Shadwell was not nac confirmed dullard as he says him; though he was a humble poet, he was the comic dramatist of some repute.
