If you are thinking about a college career as an American Studies Major, this is a must read for you. If you can defend populism after this book you deserve your degree.
This is one I’d like to read in the original Spanish, when I’m ready.

Good anti-left wing Latin American propaganda. Dek worthy of a full review. Jan 04, Katherin Quintero rated it really liked it. Jul 09, Irene Azuaje rated it really liked it. Mar 08, Michy rated it liked it. He will stick to the idea that others have wronged him despite the lack of proof and despite the fact that keeping to such an ideology is harmful to him. While Galeano wrote with poetry, Mendoza, et. While the authors serve up a refreshing change of perspective, much of Latin American history actually was dominated by issues of domination.
When Wright discusses the emergence of revolutions in Latin America, the viciousness of leftist regimes did not excuse the horrors of the outgoing regimes. Issues pervaded both sides. The forward identifies the authors as neoliberals and Maanual, et.
The authors state that neoliberalism failed in countries like Mexico because the groundwork Juarez had established was dismantled before its time. It could be argued that they succumb to the same sins they accuse others of committing. One imagines that the authors would welcome the discussion either way. This book was written at the beginning of the ‘s when most countries of South America and Central America were in the grips of comparative despair and poverty.
Forward 20 years later and it seems the governments in these formerly poor countries were taking these lessons dispensed by the superpowers to heart. Get your house in order they said. And then, the U. In a w Ah, the irony. In a way, the book was correct, the advancement of countries like Chile, Brazil, Costa Rica and others has been short of spectacular.
Granted, the latinamerican perfectp is still alive and kicking with his Che Guevara t-shirts and his demagogic idjota. In some cases it rose to power like in Venezuela or Bolivia or stayed put like in Cuba who still today is quietly begging for foreign investment what do we think lifting the embargo means.
So yes, investment, competition, wealth creation and in short, capitalism has generally lifted a few boats and continues to do so despite endemic corruption and crony privileges. It’s very exciting what’s happening in Mexico, one could only imagine where Mexico would be if they could get rid of the drug traffic scourge and the whole folklorico-religious-raza idiocy.
Unfortunately, the book was so entranced by the wealth creation mechanisms of places like the U. The sad part is that today the U.

Sure, doesn’t seem plausible just yet but give it twenty more years. Nov 06, Nelson rated it liked it.
Why does Latin Americans have ltainoamericano repeat the mistakes of the past? If they are destined to err, why not make original errors? How populism, envy, and xenophobia triumphed over rule of law and hard work and kept an entire continent in poverty. Readable when understood that the term “idiot” is less meant as pejorative and more as a classification of an ever-present mindset throughout Latin America.
A lot of my friends will blacklist me for four-starring this book. Witty, funny, and even caustic at times, it was a slower read for me but totally worth it. A scrumptious blend of sassy and informative.
An excellent book explaining the morally bankrupt justifications and philosophies behind the corrupt dictatorships of latin america that continue to today.
