Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is notable for its size. Upon arrival, the boys are questioned on their “reactionary backgrounds” by the Chief Chen Tianluthe village leader, in the presence of the other villagers. It deals with the life of two young Chinese men exiled to the countryside under Mao because of their distinguished fathers.

Brooke Allen of The New York Times Book Review states that the novel is “worthwhile, but unsatisfactory” and that the epithets for most of the characters “work against the material’s power. As Ma meets up with his old friend Luo in Shanghai, the latter confesses an earlier failed attempt to search for bbalzac Little Seamstress in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
