From this intensive interest and use of the Internet sprang his bold new project: I’ve enjoyed Paulo Coelho’s work before, but this is a very weak novel. Refresh and try again. It is the story of a mysterious woman named Athena, told by the many who knew her well—or hardly at all. Two years later, her marriage falls apart because they are facing too many problems due to their young age and lack of money or mostly because he felt that she loved only the child and used him to get what she wanted. I had to keep turning the pages back to remember again who I was supposed to be imagining those words coming from.
She lives on impulse. Everything is stiff and completely artificial. I didn’t enjoy it or learn much from it. Bits and pieces don’t fit together? Portobello was so turned off by the style that I found it difficult to get past it to try and understand the story. Paulo Coelho is a bit like a literary version of Dr Phil.

I This is not a novel — it’s a treatise. The “reveal” at the end was only surprising because it was dumb and unnecessary. In her quest, she opens her heart to intoxicating powers and becomes a controversial spiritual leader in London. Most of the book is taken up in various people talking to each other in the kind of philosophical conversations that normal people almost never have.
Works by Paulo Coelho. This is not a novel — it’s a treatise. The part about the gypsies I learned so much from his books about having self strength and acceptance. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Whenever you see a chat starting, buckle up. They all spoke in long convoluted preachy sentences, the way that almost no one actually talks.
It falls into a category that I portlbello “Spirituality ” –those books that take time-tested universal truths espoused by many great thinkers, psychologists, theologists, self-help books, New Age books, etc. Unless you are a fan of a unique sort of witches!
I admit that I am easily creeped out by the kind of leaky spirituality that this book revolves around, but beyond that, the writing for female characters is god-awful and the mystic quest that the protagonist is on is laughable. It’s no good even for poking fun at. You’d think it would’ve been nice hearing a story from several different point of views, bfuxa it wasn’t.
It’s such a overblown book, I couldn’t deal with it. I did get where Paulo was coming from and what he was on about, but the book just didnt do it for me and felt kind of pointless. Trapped for hours in an airport with nothing to read, my wife was further victimized by this remarkably bad book, one of five books available for sale in Portland International Airport at 2am.

I felt like Coelho overreached to try to sound too much of a specific type of “woman”. It’s a platform for his blah-blah-blah philosophizing about Joy is this, Love is that, do these five things to live well, etc. Sona S Athena’s attitude was very different from other normal woman. Being stubborn as I am, somehow managed to get through it and was left utterly dismayed and with a very bad taste in my mouth.
