There is hospel cohesive narrative even in the sections that Leland attributes to the Vangelo. I hope at some future time to be better informed. Leland summarises the mythic material in the book in its appendix, writing “Diana is Queen of the Witches; an associate of Herodias Aradia in her relations to sorcery; that she bore a child to her brother vospel Sun here Lucifer ; that as a moon-goddess she is in some relation to Cain, who dwells as prisoner in the moon, and that the witches of old were people oppressed by feudal lands, the former revenging themselves in every way, and holding orgies to Diana which the Church represented as being the worship of Satan “.

After the publication of Margaret Murray ‘s The Witch-cult in Western Europewhich hypothesised that the European witch trials were actually a persecution of a pagan religious survival, American sensationalist author Theda Kenyon’s book Witches Still Live connected Murray’s thesis with the witchcraft religion in Aradia.

His book, in fine, belongs to the very great number of those written on ghosts and superstition since the latter has fallen into discredit, in which the authors indulge in much satirical and very safe but cheap ridicule of what to them is merely vulgar and false.
It is a work worth reading, just mere curiosity should allow any aspiring writer to read this work at least once. Charles Leland was an American expatriate journalist, folklorist, and author. Therefore it cannot effectively be used to discredit other writings or views on Italian witchcraft, nor is it a representative ethnographic foundation against which other writings or views “must” be compared.
After comparing them both I found that the translation errors are rather minimal, though there are some instances where it would change the meaning quite a bit, but when I look at what Leland presents and what the modern translator presents I am going to utilize Lelands.
Still, I prefer to just enjoy it as a story, and not as a historical document, so it was a somewhat amusing product of the 19th century. Throughout recorded history witchcraft has been an illegal practice. The book is very simple to read filled with stories and some rather easy to do spells. Only in this case the folklore is about witches.
The content, however, is anything but suitable for young readers or anybody who thinks witchcraft is all white light and pretty crystals. I recommend this for pagans following the Witchcraft path, and I suggest you take it not as “Gospel” aka literalbut as an inspirational text. One person found this helpful.
